What could possibly make your birthday more special? Receiving a Happy Birthday text from your crush, of course!
In the moment, you may be anxious to respond and draw a blank. Don’t waste your chance! You can get him talking and make the most of the text by following the tips below.
1. Say thank you
This is the easiest and most basic way to respond. You shouldn’t just say those two words though, send a text that’s a little more elaborate. Try these:
- “Thanks so much! I’m having the best day.”
- “Thanks! I can’t believe I’m X years old already. Crazy, right?”
- Thank you! It’s so sweet of you to remember!”
At the very least, acknowledge that he took time out of his day to send you a text. Expressing gratitude for this small kind gesture is the polite thing to do, anything extra is just sprinkles on top.
2. Send your crush a picture
Send him a pic to spark his interest! It doesn’t have to be anything crazy. It can be as simple as a photo of your cake or party decorations. You could also send him:
– A birthday selfi
Caption: “My first selfie as a X-year-old!”
– A pic of your favorite gift.
Caption: “I got the coolest gift from X today. Check it out!”
– A photo of your party guests having a blast
Caption: “You’ll have to join us next time. Tonight has been so much fun!”
– A snap of lit birthday candles
Caption: “Quick! What should I wish for?”
These are all sure-fire ways to get him interested and give you more to talk about! Just remember to keep it classy and simple.
You may be feeling bold, but don’t send him anything you wouldn’t usually consider sending a crush. Set a positive tone for the new year of your life, try not to start it with fresh regrets.
3. Ask him a question
Increase the odds of getting a response by asking a question! If he has to answer your text, it creates more opportunity for the conversation to continue.
It doesn’t have to be a particularly deep question, keeping it casual and relevant to the topic (your birthday) should work fine. Here are some questions to get you started:
- “I forget, when is your birthday, again?”
- “What did you wish for on your last birthday?”
- “Of all the birthdays and parties you’ve had, which one was your favorite/was the most memorable?”
- “What age are you looking forward to most?”
- “How did you feel when you turned X age?”
- “What are birthdays like for you?”
- “Do you have any big birthday plans this year?”
- “How has your day been?”
Once you’ve gotten the conversation started, it should naturally flow from there. You can ask him more than one to get things going, but try to stick to one or two, and no more than three.
If his answers are so unenthusiastic that you have to continue to ask him questions to keep him talking, it will feel more like an interrogation than a productive conversation. Plus, you have better things to do, like eat cake and laugh with friends.
4. Tell him a joke
Show off your silly side! This strategy is not for the meek. If you choose to tell a joke, it either has to be hilariously funny or so lame that it makes him chuckle.
It should also probably adhere to the birthday theme, otherwise it may seem strange that you’re responding to a thank you text with a crack about airplane food.
Bust out your best worst birthday joke or borrow one from the internet and see if you can get a laugh out of him. See if you can make any of these work:
- Q: What did one birthday candle say to the other?
- A: Birthdays really light me up!
- Q: What happens when thieves crash a birthday party?
- A: They take the cake!
- Q: How do pickles celebrate their birthdays?
- A: They relish them!
Worst case scenario, if he says they didn’t make him laugh, challenge him to a birthday joke contest to see if he can find something better. Loser owes the winner a milkshake!
5. Flirt with him
Feeling especially brave? Cut straight to the chase and initiate flirting! Using a few cheeky emojis should help get the point across, since intent doesn’t always translate very well via text message.
- Tell him your birthday wish is to get to know him better.
- Tease him by telling him it’s okay that he didn’t get you a gift, all you want is his presence (haha, get it? Okay, maybe save this one for the joke-telling bit.)
- Straight up ask him to come join you in celebration!
What to do if he doesn’t respond or try keep the conversation going
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.
If he doesn’t text you back or isn’t putting effort into keeping the conversation going, don’t read into it too much. He could be occupied, or maybe he just doesn’t have the energy to hold a back-and-forth exchange at the moment.
Don’t stress!
It’s not like you can only talk to him on your birthday. You’ll get plenty of other opportunities to wow him with your conversational skills.
Play it cool.
Don’t feel like you have to triple-text him to keep him engaged. If the conversation is dry, let it be dry. You can even be the first one to stop responding. You are busy with your birthday activities, after all.
Don’t wait around all night for your phone to buzz.
Enjoy your day and focus on the people who are spending time celebrating with you. You can always text him first tomorrow, or talk to him in person and tell him all about how awesome your birthday was at a later date.
In short, don’t stress too much about what you say to him or if he replies after you’ve attempted to get the conversation going.
There’s only so much you can do, and you shouldn’t spend the whole of your birthday scheming up ways to get him to talk. Enjoy your birthday! If he does end up talking to you, it will make the day that much sweeter.
