Trying to organize an amazing date can be tricky when you can’t drive.
You might be going on a first date with someone you really like, or maybe neither you nor your boyfriend can drive and you’re bored of doing the same thing all the time.
No matter what the situation, there are a ton of ways to go on a date without being able to drive, let’s get into it!
The first thing you need to think about, before deciding what to do on the date, is to figure out how you are going to meet the other person. Here are the five options:
If you don’t live too far away you can walk to meet them somewhere, or better yet, meet each other half way and go on a walk together!
The same goes for cycling. It can actually be really romantic to go on a bike ride with someone you like, so if you both have bikes and the weather’s nice, it makes the perfect date.
You could try public transport. Depending on where you live taking the metro or bus might be a convenient option, especially if you are going downtown.
You can try and hitch a ride from your parents, siblings or friends who can drive. It can be awkward to coordinate drop off and pick up times but if you plan in advance it’s a solid option.
Last but not least you could have a virtual date. We’ve all gotten pretty used to being on video calls these days, so if you live far away having a virtual date might be the best option.
Okay, now it’s time to decide what you want to do on your date. Here are ten date ideas perfect for when you can’t drive.
1. Go on a metro trip 🚇
It’s just like a road trip but on the metro!
It doesn’t matter if you can’t drive, just look up your local metro/subway (or bus) route and see what hidden treasures they pass.
Find cool things that you never knew existed, like parks, amazing street art, or just discover new areas to wander around and grab some lunch.
Be spontaneous and explore places you see on the way, but make sure you still have a loose plan about where you’re going. You don’t want to end up lost or somewhere unexciting.
It might be an idea to let someone know where you’re heading, just in case you need a ride later!
2. Get out in nature 🌳
If there’s a park or forest within walking distance, arrange a walking date! There’s no better way to get to know someone than to just spend time chatting with them.
You could even bring a picnic or stop off for ice cream on route.
If the nearest park is a bit too far to walk, how about a bike ride? Biking is great because it allows you to cover more ground. You and your date can show each other all your favorite places around town.
3. Take a virtual tour around the world 🌎
Try before you buy and see which places will make your ultimate travel bucket list.
With GoogleEarth you can virtually explore attractions from across the globe, from the Grand Canyon to glow-worm caves in New Zealand. Try heading over to Christmas Island and watch the red crabs migrate from land to water.
To make it extra-special, play wildlife music as you explore to give you the full experience. You’ll both feel like you’ve traveled the world with a few clicks!
4. Visit a nearby arcade 🕹️
Arcades are such an underrated date night idea. They’re cheap, cheerful, and full of ways to have a laugh!
See who can get the highest score on Mario Kart, embarrass yourselves on the dance mat and finally settle the debate about who would survive a zombie apocalypse. To top it off, you can end the date with a trip to the photo booth.
If your nearest arcade is a long walk, ask for a lift or make it a double date with a couple that drives.
5. Play sports 🎾
A fun and unique date idea, which is perfect even if you can’t drive, is to head to your nearest gym to play a two-person sport.
If it’s your usual gym you’ll have a way of getting there, whether it be by public transport, walking, or cycling.
Being active with your date can bring a ton of fun and adrenaline to your relationship. It can also help build trust and boost your physical and mental health.
So get off the sofa and have some friendly competition with a game of tennis or badminton. Loser gets to be blindfolded for the bake-off!
6. Have a blindfolded bake-off 🍰
Having a blindfolded bake-off is a great test of your communication skills and is sure to have you both rolling around laughing.
Maybe you already live with your partner, which makes it super easy, but even if you don’t, it cuts the transportation in half because only one of you has to make their way to the other’s house!
Here’s how it works – one person is blindfolded while the other instructs and guides.
You might end up with a very messy kitchen and some strange looking cookies, but it will be a ton of fun and will change up your usual date night routine.
Plus, you’ll get to eat a romantic home-made meal together afterward!
7. Have a game night in 🎮
When you can’t drive, the easy choice for a date night is to just stay in! You could play video games, nostalgic board games, or even party games together.
There are a ton of two-player games that aren’t dull or family orientated.
Search YouTube and Google for couple’s games and you’ll find trivia quizzes, ‘who’s most likely to’ questions, and some more X-rated games for couples to play.
8. Go on a photo booth tour at your local mall 📷
Are you one of those couples that doesn’t have any printed photos together?
Capture your date on camera by going on a tour of your local mall (or to several if there’s more than one in walking distance) and visit every photo booth you can find.
See who can pull a different face in every picture! You’ll make great memories and end the date with a ton of funny photo strips that you can keep forever.
9. Create a relationship time capsule ⌚
Preserve your love forever and create a relationship time capsule.
Time capsules paint a picture of old times and are a fun way to think about your past, present, and future together.
You could add pictures, love letters, your bucket list, lyrics of your favorite song, and other sentimental items.
You could be making a date night for your future selves too when you eventually open it!
10. Do a craft project 🎨
Another great at home date night idea is to bring out your creative sides with some arts and crafts! You can make this date idea as serious or as silly as you like.
If you want to actually create something that looks great, make sure you have all the supplies you need in advance and follow along to a tutorial online.
Otherwise you could try finger painting, drawing portraits of each other, or making gifts for one another with whatever materials you can find at home.
It’s always fun to turn things into a competition, so send pictures of the final products to friends or family and have them judge which is the best. Loser pays for takeout!
